Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of personalities, and a gripping narrative including divine entities, evil spirits, and sinister influences increasing in power within the city.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

The latest chapter finished on a huge suspense moment and introduced the premier party of heroes who will split off from the main group to embark on their own adventure, apart from the additional parties.

This warrior group includes the determined fighter (played by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

With 13 cast members, it was obvious from the beginning that having everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

This explains, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Prelude, intertwining the personal journeys before branching into three separate parties: Fighters, Planners, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for players who enjoy a classically intense fight-heavy gameplay experience where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Initially, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander might look out of place, but the events of the latest installment demonstrate why these particular heroes are best suited for the combat party.

Reasons to Leave

For one thing, the group knows exactly where to go next after a brutal first encounter with the antagonists.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose demise initiated the campaign’s events—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his own means, entering the secret base, attacking the character, and stealing all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The antagonist then cleared his liabilities and fled to a secure base in the northern region, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each adventurer has a individual motive to depart the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and trusted friend, seeks retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the northern area and warns that it is a hostile place.
  • The warrior and The healer, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to kill Teor and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their reputation as important members in the influential clan could assist the group reach areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, The fighter swore a life debt to The savior for his deliverance and will now follow him anywhere.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are sought by the rulers that rule Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making staying in the city no longer safe:

  • The rogue and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and Wicander defied the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by the family.

This leaves them few options but to head to Timmony in search of the traitor.

Future Episodes

Based on episode three’s post-show segment, we find out that the Soldiers table will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight players to form the Seekers and Strategists parties.

Audiences can look forward to discovering which characters will be where in the story’s last Overture episode, released on the upcoming Thursday.
