The star has given the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which works to save the United Kingdom's independent music venues.

He was given the cheque on mid-October as his third album People Watching was declared the top album of the last 12 months.

The musician has decided to donate the funds to the trust, in appreciation of the essential function grassroots venues had in his beginning days.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing this success if it weren't for all the gigs I did around the area, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," said the artist. "These spaces are legendary, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, over 150 of these venues have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, well-known musicians such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to help venues survive, by adding a small levy to their ticket prices, which goes to help independent venues.

He also joined in, raising over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to help 38 local spots across the UK.

The donation assisted locations that were dealing with potential shutdown due to challenges stemming from flooding, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and sound issues.

Some locations received financial assistance in modernizing facilities and technical equipment that helped musicians and fans.

"The notion that funds from performances in large arenas backs the smaller venues, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has said.

The musician is not the first artist to give his award prize money to worthy causes.

When Pulp earned the trophy in the mid-90s for their release the album, frontman the singer stated that the band would donate their cash to the non-profit War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer she shared her award between several charities, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I donated a £1,000 to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked new equipment," she explained to the media.

Previously, they donated their winnings to the local youth club that developed their act, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

Also the 1994 recipients the group donated their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was diagnosed the condition.

"Receiving the award was ample," stated singer the singer. "The money was the bonus but we could do without the cherry, because we had the cake. So our winning touched the lives of others."

Last week, the MVT revealed it had protected a couple of grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The first in that area and the second in the city were bought under the community ownership program, which is backed by a national body and enthusiasts who acquire "stakes" in the properties.
